The Bathurst Courier, Extracts From The Bathurst Courier 1834-1857

Few records of daily life are as diverse as local newspapers. The Bathurst Courier newspaper is a goldmine of information stretching back to the early days of settlement when Ontario was known as Upper Canada, and later as Canada West.

In 1828, John Stewart, a school master of the Bathurst District Grammar School in Perth began the first Ottawa Valley newspaper - The Bathurst Independent Examiner. The Independent Examiner ceased publication in the late spring of 1834. Three months later in August of 1834, John Cameron, a highly respected local doctor purchased the business of Mr. J. Stewart and began publishing the Bathurst Courier and Ottawa Gazette. Over the years, the paper's name changed, as did its owners until it became known as the present day Perth Courier. The Perth Courier is the second oldest, continuously published community (weekly) newspaper in Canada. The paper was known as The Bathurst Courier from 1834 until 1857, when the name was changed to The Perth Courier.

This book contains carefully recorded abstracts of genealogical interest, taken from The Bathurst Courier for the years of 1834 to 1857. There are no known copies of the 1829-1833 issues of the The Bathurst Independent Examiner. Therefore, extracts from 1829-1833 do not appear in this volume.
