HARDCOVER EDITION

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Ottawa - Baptism, Marriage and Death Records 1829-1949
By Donald A. McKenzie

St. Andrew’s is the oldest Protestant church in Ottawa (known earlier as Bytown). The congregation was organized in 1828 and the first minister arrived in the summer of 1829. Since that time, the baptisms, marriages and deaths of many founding families in Bytown / Ottawa have been recorded by the various ministers of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

This book contains a listing of those records, painstakingly transcribed by Donald A. Mackenzie. Donald McKenzie spent many hundreds of hours at Library and Archives Canada transcribing the records of the original entries from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church from microfilm. The transcriptions of the baptism, marriage and burial records are recorded in seven volumes, all of which are included in this one book.

Contents include:

  • British Isles Family History of Greater Ottawa (project sponsor)
  • Acknowledgements
  • Dedication
  • Baptisms, 1829-1862
  • Baptisms, 1863-1924
  • Marriages, 1830-1857
  • Marriages, 1858-1900
  • Marriages, Jan 1901-Oct 1926
  • Marriages, Dec 1926-June 1949
  • Deaths, 1836-1892
  • Annex A: Summary of the data fields in Baptism, Marriage and Death volumes.
  • Annex B: Rev. Durie

In addition to Donald McKenzie's transcriptions of church records, Sheila Urquhart, St. Andrew’s archivist provided a short biography of Rev. Durie which is included in Annex B.

Generations of Ottawans have been baptized, married and buried from St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. The vast majority of these, particularly in the early years, were migrants to the area who had roots in the British Isles. The names of many of the founding families of Bytown, Hull and Ottawa who originated in the British Isles, such as Billings, Booth, Sparks and Lyon, can be found in these transcripts. This is the first time such records from one of Ottawa's oldest churches have been made widely available.

This book is beautifully prepared with a full colour dustcover, several colour pages illustrating stained glass windows, printed on acid-free paper for long-life, and bound in a premium hard cover binding. Whether it graces your coffee table or bookcase, it will be a heirloom for those with connections to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Ottawa.

  1. So happy that I found this book.

Posted by Donna B. on 5th May 2011

My family went to St. Andrews in Ottawa for 3 generations. This book includes lots of our family marriages, deaths and births. The pictures of the stained glass windows are exceptional.
