This facsimile reprint of Lovell's 1873 volume is an important reference work for both historians and genealogists. Using expertise developed over decades of directory publishing, John Lovell & Sons collected descriptions of more than six thousand communities and fifteen hundred lakes and rivers in Canada and Newfoundland of 1873, plus steamboat and railway connections for destinations across British North America.

• Section one, the largest section of the book, contains over six thousand descriptions and historical facts about cities, towns and villages across Canada, as they were known in 1873. Descriptions name and locate each community, frequently including information about business and industry landmarks, churches, institutions, transportation and communication, and municipal government. Descriptions of places vary in the amount of detail they provide.
  
  
  
• Section two includes a listing of over fifteen hundred lakes and rivers with their location, size and general information.
  
  
  
• Section three is a table showing the railway and steamboat routes within British North America in 1873, which will assist researchers in understanding the routes that their ancestors may have migrated over. The final section, of more than one hundred pages, details railway and steamboat connections to these communities - perhaps yielding valuable clues to ancestral migration routes. The table lists the distance that each place in British North America is to the nearest railway station or port.
