This popular guide provides a province-by-province description of where to access provincial vital records, complete with contact information including postal addresses, telephone numbers (most are toll-free), fax, email addresses and websites. Government registration of births, marriages and deaths, is usually referred to as civil registration and the records as "vital records". In Canada, the responsibility for all aspects of civil registration falls to the individual provinces and territories.
Please note that he records of many First Nation's people are an exception to the general sources offered in this guide. Traditionally, records of First Nation's people (aboriginal people) have been recorded by the federal government in Ottawa and often excluded from traditional church or other records unless the individual(s) converted to Christianity.
